Matthew Behind the Wheel

Micah’s older brother, Matthew, has just turned 15, which means he only has six more months until he can get his driver’s permit. Micah and his family live out their lives until Matthew one day gets taken into the license bureau to get his permit. He takes the test and passes it on his first try, giving him his permit to practice driving. With only a year away of getting his license, Matthew nervously begins driving with his stepdad. After about two hours of driving, Matthew returns home with his stepdad and goes to his room, doing his homework while distracted with thoughts of driving to his anxiety. At one point in the day, Micah walks past Matthew’s room and hears sniffling, opening the door and finding Matthew in tears.

“What’s wrong, Matthew?” asked Micah.

“Micah, just go away.” responded Matthew annoyingly.

“Whatever.” replies Micah annoyingly while closing the door and walking off. The next day in school, Matthew is once again distracted by thoughts of driving, which bothers him at home as well. Micah sees Matthew nervous about driving and says, “If you don’t mind…”

“Shut up! Just leave me alone!” said Matthew angrily.

“Ok then. I’ll just show you my driving simulator later.” responds Micah annoyingly while walking off. Matthew peaks out from his room and asks, “Wait. Did you just say ‘driving simulator’?”

“Yes, but since you’re acting like a rusty bolt to me, I’m not going to let you try it out…unless you can learn to straighten up.” answered Micah annoyingly.

“I’m sorry. All this driving stuff is making me nervous.” responded Matthew.

“I understand, but the least you could do is be kind to others.” replied Micah.

“I don’t cope with my feelings very well, ok? Just let me try out your simulator, please?” asked Matthew.

“All right.” answered Micah. Micah leads Matthew to his laboratory and to his driving simulator, which Matthew starts using right away. Matthew tries it out so many times and performs poorly every time, eventually giving up and saying, “It’s no use. I’ll never get good at driving.”

“Yes you will. It’s just a simulator. It’s not the real thing.” responded Micah.

“I know, but…still.” replied Matthew.

“Just keep at it. Perhaps you just need a little more time.” said Micah.

“Just stop, ok? I don’t want to hear another word about this.” said Matthew annoyingly.

“There you go again. Acting like a rusty bolt.” responded Micah annoyingly. Matthew angrily sighs, rolls his eyes, and returns to his room while Micah does some work in his laboratory. Day after day, Matthew goes out driving with his parents and stepparents while trying out Micah’s driving simulator, starting out rough and gradually getting better, which increases his confidence. About a month away from his 16th birthday, Matthew begins driver’s education, which starts to make him nervous again. Matthew goes about school, distracted with thoughts about driving while maintaining his studies with driver’s education. As part of the program, Matthew completes 8 hours of driving while continuing to practice with his parents and stepparents and on Micah’s driving simulator. One day, Trekker watches as Matthew completes driver’s education and gets an evil plan.

“Enjoy your moment, Matthew. Because I’ve got a surprise for you. Ha ha ha ha!” laughed Trekker menacingly. At night, Trekker sneaks into Micah’s home and kidnaps Micah, along with his mother and stepfather while subsequently warping over and kidnapping his father and stepmother as they all sleep. The next day, Micah wakes up cuffed onto a slab of concrete at Trekker’s mansion next to his parents and stepparents with Micah’s mother worriedly asking, “What’s going on here?!”

“It can only mean one thing…” answers Micah while Trekker approaches.

“That’s right. You are all my prisoners, and don’t worry. I’ve already sent a message to a certain somebody who should be here right about…now!” says Trekker while looking over at his Warp Machine. Matthew suddenly appears in the Warp Machine and approaches Trekker.

“Ah, right on schedule. You’re in for a real treat.” continued Trekker menacingly. Trekker leads Matthew to a driving course right outside his mansion, seeing Trekker Jr. just completing it.

“If you want your folks back, you’re going to have to complete this driving course. Care to see a demonstration?” asks Trekker menacingly while snapping his finger. Trekker Jr. begins driving the course again and finishes in one piece to Matthew’s anxiety.

“You can do it, Matthew! Our fate is in your hands!” said Micah.

“But I’ve never driven anything like this before! Just look at Trekker Jr.! He’s not old enough to get his license, and yet, he drives way better than me!” responded Matthew.

“You don’t really have a choice! It’s either drive the course, or never see us again!” replied Micah. Matthew worriedly contemplates while Trekker says, “He’s got a point, you know. Take my advice. Chicken out!” Matthew continues to contemplate to his anxiety while Trekker and Trekker Jr. laugh and taunt him, finally getting his wits together and saying, “I’ll do it.”

“Ha! I knew you would…what?!” asked Trekker astonishingly.

“You heard me. I’ll drive this course.” responded Matthew.

“You’d better back out now while you still have the chance. You have no idea what you’re up against here.” replied Trekker menacingly.

“Maybe so, but I’m doing it for my family.” said Matthew.

“Ok. It’s your funeral.” responds Trekker while leading Matthew to a car. Matthew enters the car and puts on his safety belt, taking a deep breath with Trekker Jr. subsequently saying, “Get ready to eat my dust!” Matthew looks over and sees Trekker Jr. inside a car next to him with Trekker saying, “Whoever crosses this finish line first wins.”

“You didn’t tell me this was a race!” said Matthew.

“Oh, silly me. I must have forgotten.” taunts Trekker while holding up a checkered flag. Matthew nervously grips the steering wheel while Trekker Jr. prepares for the race.

“Gentlemen, start your engines!” said Trekker. Matthew and Trekker Jr. start up their cars while Trekker raises the flag.

“On your mark…get set…..go!” says Trekker while waving the checkered flag. Trekker Jr. rockets out of the finish line while Matthew cautiously takes off, observing the driving course to his anxiety. Trekker Jr. takes a huge lead with Trekker saying, “Keep it up, Jr.! Matthew and his family are all goners!”

“I won’t let you down, dad!” responded Trekker Jr. Matthew approaches a sharp turn with spikes coming out of the edge, successfully avoiding them without a scratch while approaching a ramp with lava underneath. Taking a deep breath, Matthew puts the pedal to the metal and jumps the ramp, landing on the other side of the road while proceeding to drive the course. Trekker Jr. gradually gets closer to the finish line and says, “This is it! I’m going to win!” Trekker Jr.’s car suddenly sputters and comes to an abrupt halt just inches from the finish line with Trekker Jr. saying, “Dad, we got a problem.”

“Check the fuel gauge.” responded Trekker. Trekker Jr. looks at the fuel gauge and sees the needle on “E” while worriedly responding, “Uuuhhh…”

“You’re out of gas, aren’t you?” asked Trekker annoyingly.

“Well, uh…” responded Trekker Jr.

“You numbskull! You should have topped off before we even started!” says Trekker angrily while pulling a gas tank to Trekker Jr. Trekker plugs the nozzle into the gas tank and begins filling up Trekker Jr.’s car while angrily continuing, “Matthew’s getting closer, you know! If you would have paid attention to the speedometer’s readings, we wouldn’t have this problem!”

“I’m sorry, dad. I got carried away.” responded Trekker Jr.

“Sorry doesn’t fix the problem, now does it?” asked Trekker angrily.

“Well…no.” answered Trekker Jr. A little while later, Trekker finishes topping Trekker Jr. off while angrily saying, “There. Now, don’t let this happen again.” Trekker Jr. gets back into his car and starts it up while Matthew drives past him and crosses the finish line.

“See?! What did I tell you?! You’re never going to drive in this town again!” says Trekker angrily while dragging Trekker Jr. off by his ear. Matthew approaches and frees Micah, his parents, and stepparents while saying, “Wow! What an experience!”

“And it wasn’t even part of your driving lessons.” responded Matthew’s mother.

“You think you’re ready to get your license now, Matthew?” asked Matthew’s father. Matthew contemplates for a moment while shortly after his 16th birthday, he acquires his driver’s license and begins driving on his own while Micah, his parents, and stepparents watch proudly and cherish the moment.

The End
